Broadband Over Power Lines
Posted by pfitz under Technology
One of the primary factors in keeping computers from every classroom (besides buying the machines), is access service. To get on the Internet and use any online resources, you either need wireless access to a network or sufficient ports or network drops installed in the classrooms.
Think how much easier this would be if we could get broadband Internet access over POWER LINES! The computers already have to be plugged in to run, and this Broadband over Power Lines (BPL) technology already exists. With investments from Google, IBM, and other major technology companies, there are already communities that are started to be configured for this access. If this were to become more widespread, just imagine: anywhere you’ve got power lines running to supply electricity, people could have Internet access. Whether “out in the boondocks” or in a 3rd grade classroom. It truly could be another victorious battle in the information revolution.
